Innovative Business Started in Recession by Winnipegger
Winnipeg Free Press, June 1992
Winnipegger Harry Bohna took 17 years of experience in the construction industry and turned it into a new business concept that's taking off.
The business is Happy Harry's Used Building Materials at 46 Archibald St. From this location, Harry sells used building materials for home and cottage renovations at prices 50 - 90% lower than regular retail prices.
Harry began the business over a year ago -- at a recessionary time when most doubted the success of an established business -- let alone a new business and a new concept.
Today, customers can find doors, windows, lighting, sinks, cabinets, even antiques and unique one-of-a-kind items at Happy Harry's. Prices are open to negotiation making the entire atmosphere a giant garage sale. In fact, Harry has even sold a used garage -- making it the ultimate "garage sale." Customers are responding to the bargains and Happy Harry's is taking off.
A 4' x 5' wooden storm window is sold at a retail outlet for approximately $150 -- Harry regularly sells them for $20 . . . or $15 if the customer is willing to barter.
With over 7,000 square feet of store space, customers can browse and choose from a wide selection of material. In doors alone, Happy Harry estimates he has about 1,000 in stock.
The concept also appeals to those concerned about the environment. Happy Harry's buys, sells and takes consignments on a vast range of building materials and parts. Cash is paid for unwanted items in good condition and Harry even offers a free pick-up service.
Happy Harry's has a second location in Calgary that has also taken off. Harry has begun widening his search for used material and is establishing a network of contacts throughout North America. The trend towards selling used materials at hugely discounted prices is a trend that has caught on in other provinces and throughout the United States. Happy Harry's is truly a business idea whose time has come.
